Diving into the world of podcasting with “Poddin’ My Noggin” has been a journey filled with laughter, fear, learning curves, and the occasional unexpected guest appearance by my cat, Mima. From the euphoria of nailing the perfect interview to the despair of discovering you’ve lost an entire hour of an interview due to technical difficulties, here’s a peek behind the curtain at the not-so-glamorous yet utterly delightful world of podcast production.
The Great Microphone Saga
Every podcaster’s journey begins with the quest for the perfect microphone. Mine was no exception. After extensive research, I settled on a model praised for its crystal-clear audio quality. Little did I know, it also had a penchant for picking up the melodious sounds of my swallowing. Let’s just say my podcast initially featured more renditions of “throat contracting” than intended. I had been sick, the microphone was too close, and many hours of editing later I was able to produce a swallow-free track.
Bloopers Galore
Bloopers are the unsung heroes of podcasting, offering a much-needed laugh amidst the chaos of production. One memorable mishap occurred during an interview with a pretty important guest. Just as we were discussing the throes of his cancer diagnosis, someone rang my doorbell and I coughed while drinking a sip of water. Removed in post, but perhaps one day I’ll produce a blooper reel.
The Episode That Almost Wasn’t
Every podcaster has that one episode that almost got away. For “Poddin’ My Noggin,” it was the time I everything decided to simply not work. After an hour-long, deeply engaging conversation with a guest, I sat down to edit the episode…chaos. My video feed was non-existent and her audio was choppier than the Atlantic. In a panic, I confessed my mistake, expecting frustration. Instead, we shared a laugh and rescheduled the conversation for a later date, and the resulting conversation was even more dynamic and insightful than the first.
Learning on the Fly
The journey of podcasting is one of perpetual learning—from mastering audio editing software to understanding the nuances of engaging an invisible audience. Each episode of “Poddin’ My Noggin” is a rung to this learning process, where the goal isn’t perfection but connection.
